Another great episode, thank you!! I'm curious how big a difference setting that first book to free could make for a first-time author like myself (with the understanding that everyone's situation is different and there's always a degree of who-the-hell-knows). On one hand, having ANY money coming in from this book that I've been working on for 2+ years sounds amazing. On the other hand, if giving away book one + putting book two on preorder could get the ball rolling faster, I'm open to that strategy! (I was also planning to launch book one on Kickstarter, so do you wait awhile before offering the book for free, so as not to piss off backers?)
The Kickstarter/free strategy is the biggest hurdle. You can't sell it on Kickstarter and then give it away for free. I would probably do the Kickstarter, then either put it on retailers with the intention to make it free after a year or so, or...no, that's what I would do. I would still put book 2 on preorder as long as you think you'll get it done in a year. IF you don't, then I wouldn't put it on retailers. If you CAN make a profit on book 1, you should.
